The Newport String Project presents the fourth weekend of its Newport County Concert Series on Saturday, May 2nd at 5:30pm at Rough Point This program will feature the project’s resident ensemble, the Newport String Quartet, performing works by J.S. Bach, Philip Glass and Robert Schumann.
This century spanning program features three iconic composers of the Baroque, Romantic and modern eras. As one of the final pieces ever composed by J.S. Bach, the Art of Fugue is a revered work that is both enigmatic and mysterious. Philip Glass’s evocative String Quartet No 3 draws on the music that he composed for Paul Schrader’s 1985 film on life of author, playwright and selfstyled, latter-day Samurai, Yukio Mishima. The program will conclude with a performance of Robert Schumann’s tender and life-affirming String Quartet No 3 in A major, composed in 1842 during the outpouring of creative inspiration that followed his marriage to Clara Schumann.
